The joint statement issued after the bilateral talks explicitly condemned cross-border terrorism, signalling both leaders’ shared commitment to tackling threats that cross national boundaries. “The two Prime Ministers unequivocally and strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism. They called for zero tolerance of terrorism and for concerted international efforts to combat terrorism in a comprehensive and sustained manner,” said the joint statement. For India, cross-border terrorism refers to terrorism coming from Pakistan. The proposal is expected to be taken up under the Make-I category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, which provides government funding support for indigenous design and development of critical defence technologies. Sources said four prototype engines are planned, with a mini- mum order quantity of 40 engines envisaged initially. The Navy is looking at developing a marine gas turbine in the 24-28 MW power class for main propulsion systems used on large surface combatants such as destroyers and frigates. At present, the Navy’s frontline warships rely on foreign-origin gas turbine-based propulsion systems from Ukraine’s Zorya-Mashproekt and US firm General Electric. Sources said the overall programme would need `4,000-5,000 crore investment, with the government expected to cover up to 70% of prototype development cost. On the run for stealing wheat worth `100, man held after 45 years in MP A N U R A AG S I N G H @ Bhopal AN elderly man in Madhya Pradesh, Salim Sheikh, has learnt the hard way that people seldom escape the long arm of the law. Over 45 years after he and five other youths allegedly stole wheat worth `100 from an agricultural field in southwestern Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone district, police nabbed him on Saturday . According to a senior police officer in Khargone district, Sheikh was 20 years old when he committed the theft in the Balasamud Kakad village in 1980. Now 65, Sheikh reportedly let his hair down, thinking the law would not catch up with him. So he was in for a shock when the Khargone district police from the Bagh area of the adjoining Dhar district caught him. He LONG RUN ENDS 1 2 Sheikh was 20 years old when he committed the theft in Khargone in 1980 He was nabbed from Dhar, produced in court, which sent him to judicial custody was subsequently produced in a local court, which denied him bail and sent him to judicial custody. Sheikh and another accused in the case, Salim Mohammad, remained on the run for years and were declared absconders by the court later, and an arrest warrant was issued. The police jumped into action and nabbed Sheikh from Dhar. Local media reports in Khargone suggest that Sheikh had kept a low profile since shifting to Dhar district. The PCR received a call at around 3.50 pm regarding three people lying inside a car near the service lane of Peeragarhi flyover and not responding, a senior police officer said. The deceased have been identified as Randhir (76), Shiv Naresh Singh (47), and Laxmi Devi (40). Police said that the cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem examination is conducted. However, prima facie, it appears to be a case of suspected suicide, they said. According to police, the caller said that one person was seated in the driver’s seat, while the other two were lying unconscious in the back seat. Police immediately reached the spot, forcibly opened the locked car, and pulled the occupants out. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared them dead. Police recovered some documents from the vehicle. Using the car registration number, they contacted the family of one of the deceased, which reached the spot and identified the person in the driver’s seat. The other two bodies were later identified by their family members at the hospital. The crime and forensic teams were called at the spot. The area was cordoned off, the officer said, adding that the investigation is being carried out from all angles.
