PRICE, WILL WEISSERT AND JILL COLVIN @ Washington (AP) Had a great conversation with my friend, President Donald Trump. Looking forward to working closely together once again Narendra Modi, PM Look forward to an era of a strong US under President Trump’s decisive leadership. We rely on continued strong support for Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy D ONALD Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday , an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the US Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts. With a win in Wisconsin, Trump cleared the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency. The victory validates his bare-knuckle approach to politics. He attacked his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, in deeply personal—often misogynistic and racist— terms as he pushed an apocalyptic picture of a country overrun by violent migrants. The rhetoric, paired with an image of hypermasculinity resonated , with angry voters—particularly men— in a deeply polarised nation. “I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honour of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president,” Trump told cheering supporters in Florida. Trump’s win after a gap of four years is also spectacular in the sense that only one other American president has secured two non-consecutive terms. Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th president, served as the US presi- dent between 1885-1889 and 1893-1897. In state after state, Trump outperformed what he did in the 2020 election while Harris failed to do as well as Joe Biden did in winning the presidency four years ago. Upon taking office again, Trump also will work with a Senate that will now be in Republican hands, while control of the House hadn’t been determined. In his second term, Trump has vowed to pursue an agenda centred on dramatically reshaping the federal government and pursuing retribution against his perceived enemies. The results cap a historically tumultuous and competitive election season that included two assassination attempts targeting Trump and a shift to a new Democratic nominee just a month before the party’s convention. Trump will inherit a range of challenges when he assumes office on January 20, including heightened political polarization and global crises that are testing America’s influence abroad. His win against Harris marks the second time he has defeated a female rival in a general election. A devotee performs rituals on the bank of Yamuna at Kalindi Kunj on Wednesday | PTI THE Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed a PIL seeking permission for Chhath Puja at the Geeta Colony Ghats along the Yamuna riverbed due to severe pollution. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela emphasised that the current pollution levels in the river render it unsafe for ceremonial activities. “Given the alarming state of pollution in the Yamuna, it would be harmful for devotees to use the river for Chhath Puja,” the court stated. The Delhi government, represented by counsel Santosh Kumar Tripathi, informed the court that the river remains highly contaminated and that over 1,000 alternative sites across the city have been designated for safe Chhath Puja celebrations. He assured the court that all necessary arrangements have been made at these alternative locations to accommodate the devotees. Referring to the court’s recent observations in the Shabnam Burney case, where it acknowledged the unprecedented pollution levels in the Yamuna, the bench noted, “Considering JUVENILE GETS 10-YR RIGOROUS JAIL TERM IN 2017 RAPE CASE E X P R E SS N E WS S E R V I C E @ New Delhi A Delhi court sentenced a juvenile to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a 10-year-old girl in 2017, emphasizing the need for reformation rather than immediate release. Additional Sessions Judge Susheel Bala Dagar highlighted major gaps in the Juvenile Justice system, urging the government to streamline the roles of various authorities responsible for rehabilitating children in conflict with the law (CCL). The juvenile, who was 17 at the time of the crime, was con- victed under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for aggravated penetrative sexual assault, along with a seven-year sentence for kidnapping. The court ordered these sentences to run concurrently and awarded the survivor a compensation of `10.5 lakh. Expressing concern over the lack of rehabilitation measures for them, Judge Dagar said despite spending 79 days in an ob- servation home, the juvenile did not get an Individual Care Plan or rehabilitative services. “The reports provided under the Individual Care Plan were perfunctory lacking substance, , and had limited value due to their lack of a rehabilitative focus,” the court observed. Judge Dagar criticised the authorities’ lack of “role clarity” in managing CCL cases and noted that attention to operational issues seemed severely lacking. The petition is therefore dismissed.” The petitioner’s counsel argued for a reassessment of the complete ban on riverbed gatherings, suggesting that targeted clean-up efforts could make the area viable. The Chief Justice responded that effective river cleaning is an extensive endeavour, highlighting the persistent issue of untreated sewage flowing into the river from unauthorised settlements along its banks. He also expressed disappointment over the lack of political will to address the issue. ident Barack Obama. Subramanyam’s parents arrived in the US through Dulles Airport in the late 1970s.
